Friday Frolics

Happy Friday!!! Happy Holiday Weekend!! I love Fridays. Friday is my favorite day of the week. Fridays are for my favorites on the blog and today’s favorite is one of my absolute favorite rabbit holes that I followed down this week. (The internet was definitely created by and for, really insatiably curious, distractible people such as myself) So this week on social media, I saw the hilarious post above, of quite the unusual obituary. It made me giggle. I like original, unusual people who can make fun of themselves, and who can laugh in the face of death (and who are animal lovers).

Of course, I wanted to see if this was a real obituary (and so did many others, it seems). It is a real obituary. Holly McCray Blair was a real person. She is still getting all sorts of messages posted on her memorial wall, to this day, 4 years after her death, by people who didn’t even personally know her, because her obituary has gone viral on social media. Interestingly, a lot of people wrote “GNU Holly Blair” on the page. Hmmmm. What does GNU stand for? Is it relating to the animal? Is it an acronym? “Good night, Universe” “Good kNowing U” Those were my guesses and they were wrong. My rabbit hole continued on to this carrot of information:

“Sir Terry Pratchett, an English author and humorist, invented in his Discworld comic fantasy book series (a fictional computer code):

  • G: send the message on
  • N: do not log the message
  • U: turn the message around at the end of the line and send it back again

so that the book character’s son’s name John Dearheart is memorialized forever as long as the “clacks towers” (a telegraphic device) is still in use. Chapter 4 prologue of Going Postal (a book in the series) says:

“A man is not dead while his name is still spoken.”

Terry Pratchett (the guy who Holly Blair wanted to drink beer with, after she died) died, himself, in 2015.

What better way to remember the beloved inventor of this fictional system, then, than “GNU Terry Pratchett”?”

(the above information about Terry Pratchett was taken mostly verbatim from a Reddit article)

Do you have anyone who needs to be GNU-ed? Speak their names this weekend. Keep them alive.

Here is the question of the day from 3000 Questions About Me:

2841. Is there anything you are really stingy with?

Not Manic Monday, but Bangles . . .

Okay, don’t worry. It’s Friday. (happy Fri-yay!!!!!) It’s the day on which I lighten up on the blog. It’s the day I focus on all of my material stuff, because I like my stuff. A lot. Fridays on the blog are called Favorite Things Friday and it’s a day when I discuss my favorite products. Before I get to today’s favorite, do you remember Jello Pudding Pops? They were so good. They should bring those back. (although not their unfortunate choice of a spokesperson) I know. I know. I can make jello pudding popsicles by hand, but I’m a little lazy when it comes to cooking and kitchen stuff. Facts.

Today’s favorite is seen above. I was at my bank earlier this week and the woman who waited on me looked super sharp. She had a cute haircut, a simple, but elegant black summer dress on, and her one arm was adorned with what I thought to be many artsy bangle bracelets. (see above) I told her that I loved her bracelets. (I adore bangle bracelets, but having a small wrist, I’ve always had a hard time wearing them comfortably.)

“Oh honey,” she said, with a smile on her face. “These aren’t bangles. This is just one cheapie wrap bracelet from Amazon. But I do get compliments on it, all of the time.” Well, guess who sent me the link and guess who ordered one of those bracelets from Amazon within minutes, and guess the amazing price? $9.59 This is one fun, light, easy to wear, interesting looking cheapie bracelet that brought this woman’s plain black summer dress, up a notch. If you need a fun, pick-me-up, here is the link:

(If you can’t see the link, here is the description: Fesciory Leather Wrap Bracelets for Women, Boho Leopard Multi-Layer Crystal Beads Cuff Bracelet Jewelry)

Readers, I love and appreciate you, more than you will ever know. Have a fabulous weekend! See you tomorrow.

2368. What’s one thing you’d never let a child do?

Cheeky Friday

We had a lot of chipmunks in Pennsylvania when I was growing up. I’ve honestly never seen one in Florida. We have plenty of squirrels in Florida, but personally, I always preferred chipmunks to squirrels.

I feel like a little chipmunk this morning. I can’t seem to focus on any one thing. Today’s favorite for Favorite Things Friday is another brand of pen. (Big surprise) I read an article, earlier this week, from the New York Times’ Wirecutter about the best pen brand, voted on by their entire office. The winner is the Uni-ball Jetstream RT pen. So, of course I promptly ordered some of these pens on Amazon and they are great!! The best part about writing with the Uni-ball Jetstream RT pens, that stands out to me, is how fine-lined the results are when you write. I like a thin, crisp, elegant line of ink. As I always say, it’s the happy stream of the little delightful pick-me-ups throughout the day that add up, and makes for overall great days. When you find yourself saying thank you, throughout the day, you can’t help but go to sleep with a grateful heart.

“That softness around your eyes, a softness in your face. Almost the way you feel when you’re about to start crying. That, to me, is love. It can be romantic love, it can be friendship love, it can be family love, it can be love for a chipmunk. It can be love for anything.” – Moby

Have a great weekend, friends. I hope it is filled with softness and love!

Here is the question of the day from 3000 Questions About Me:

2661. If you were to join one of the armed forces, which would it be?

Fuggy Friday

“Fuggy” is a word. Look it up. Fuggy is just like muggy, but with an “F”. I just learned the word “fuggy”, myself, a few moments ago, when I looked up synonyms for “humid.” Above is one of my favorite people whom I follow on X. He is a comedian named “OMGITSWICKS” and he makes fun of Florida, like only a true, “born and raised” Floridian can do. He recently said that we Floridians consider tropical storms to be just “rain with a name.” And, he’s right.

Before I get to my main favorite for today on, Favorite Things Friday, I want to write down what I have been pondering lately. If you look at any of my all-over-the-map musical playlists, the accounts which I follow on X (people on the left, people on the right, witches, artists, buddhists, Christians, therapists, actors, mystics and a gay furry) and my eclectic array of unusual collections all over my house and yard, you might question my sanity. For those of you who follow astrology, I am a Sagittarius sun sign, with Gemini rising. That helps to make sense of me, right? I’m an adventurer. I’m insanely curious. I love anyone who makes me laugh. I’m open-minded, and I am open to changing my mind. I believe that I have my own personal politics, and my own personal religion (more like spirituality.) I am hopeful and optimistic. I love to read and to learn. To me there is nothing better on this earth (besides my family) than animals and nature. I have friends in every category imaginable. I abhor snobbery. I think that it’s incredibly limiting. I am willing to make an effort to like anyone until I see them treat others badly. If you are manipulative, disdainful, deceitful, mean, cruel, disrespectful, bullying etc. to others, that’s when my walls go way, way up. Otherwise, your beliefs are your beliefs. I respect your right to your beliefs, to your interests, to your passions, to living your life as you see fit, as long as you do not cause pain to others. And all that I expect from you, is that you extend that same respect for me. (my sister-in-law used to say that you can generate the Ten Commandments all down to one commandment: “Don’t be a dick.”) Why have I been pondering this? I think that it’s because with all of the divisive politics and horrible wars going on, and the cancel culture running rampant, and things going on with some personal relationships in my life, I needed to ask myself, “What do I stand for?” And the conclusion that I came up with is that ultimately, I stand for kindness, and I stand for freedom. I stand for the golden rule. And in my life, I have witnessed so many different people, from so many different backgrounds, races, religions, sexual preferences, political parties, etc., ultimately stand for the same things. Kindness. Freedom. These people do unto others as they would have done to them. I suppose, ultimately and optimistically and hopefully, I believe that most of us strive for, and stand for “Love” in its highest, most unconditional form.

Okay, off of my soapbox: Here’s today’s favorite: Invisible Glass Glass Cleaner The back of our house is almost entirely sliding glass doors and we have three dogs. Nose prints. Nose prints. Nose prints. Cleaning glass is the bane of my existence. This is the first glass cleaner that has “streak-free” written on it’s can, and actually is streak-free. I purchased this recently on Amazon and it has quickly become my new holy grail of glass cleaners.

Have a great weekend, friends. Thanks for taking a little trip inside of my head. I think that’s really what this blog is for me, “a head trip” and mostly, “a heart trip.”

Olympic Friday

Hi friends!!! Happy Friday!! Happy Best Day of the Week!!! I just took a quiz asking, “How many gold medals has the United States won in the history of the Olympics?” Like any true, proud, optimistic, ethnocentric American I picked B. 3012, which was the largest number out of the three choices. It turns out a majority of us true, proud, optimistic, ethnocentric Americans also chose the same answer. We chose wrong. The true answer is 1179 gold medals (still, not too shabby).

My regular readers know that Fridays on the blog are devoted to my favorite things. What’s not to love about our stuff? We wouldn’t be true, proud, optimistic, ethnocentric Americans if we didn’t love our stuff. But before I get to my favorite for today, I wanted to give you a bonus mental health trick. We are in sticky, political times. These times tend to bring up edgy, political conversations. We’ve learned with certain people in our lives, who hold different views than us, it is best to just say, “Let’s drop the conversation.” And deep down, if you are both reasonable people who care about the health of your relationship above all else, you take this wise direction. Did you know that you can use that statement with yourself? Say you are in a mental tizzy, beating yourself up for something that you did, or something that you forgot to do, or you are just worked up about your life in general, and your mind is going over and over and over it, like a broken record, you can use the same line on yourself. “Let’s drop the conversation.” And then once you do that, force yourself to be mindful by counting your breaths, or noticing one of your senses, like what you are currently hearing. Treat your monkey mind like your annoying acquaintance who won’t let something go. Train yourself to use, “Let’s drop the conversation.” Your wisest self knows this is for the best for the overall health of your relationship with yourself.

Okay back to stuff: Earlier this summer, when I was in London, I went to the Lush flagship store. Now, not being a big fan of shopping malls, I erroneously assumed that this Lush store was the only one in existence. I excitedly texted my daughter to meet me in this amazing, interesting, one-of-a-kind store, to which she answered, “Mom, we have Lush at the mall.” (This world has gotten so global.) That turned out to be a good thing, because you probably have Lush at your own mall and if not, you can get their products online. The product which I am in love with from Lush is BIG Shampoo. Having fine hair can be such a curse, but this BIG shampoo adds volume to my hair like no other product that I have tried before it. The secret of this shampoo is big chunks of sea salt that give it an interesting, admittedly “hard to get used to” texture, but the results are worth the adjustment. You can buy it in all different sizes and even get free samples at the store, so give it a try. Let’s bring Big Hair Back, 80s Ladies!!

Have a great weekend, friends!!! See you tomorrow!!

Funky Friday

credit: Sandy Costa, Pinterest

Happy Friday!! Happy Favorite Things Friday!!! On Fridays on the blog, I’m all about the stuff in life – the literal “stuff” that makes life more interesting to live. Please see previous Friday posts for more of my favorite stuff, and please feel free to add any of your own goodies to my Comments section.

This past spring when we were in Belgium, we stopped in a store that I would say was a great deal like our Five Below chain of stores. It had rows and rows of cheap, everyday stuff, and even a whole section of party products. (It also had this truly obscene section, right out in the open, for all eyes of all ages to see, that let’s just say would have been the right place to purchase stuff for a really vulgar bachelor or bachelorette party. I’m always intrigued by the different standards, different societies have about all sorts of things, but I’m sure that we “prudes with machine guns” Americans, raise a lot of foreign eyebrows, too.)

In the store I bought a dish brush that looks like a goth woman. She had a tag on her that said “Funky Lady” and I still smile when “Funky Lady” and I do the dishes. I also purchased today’s favorite of mine, in that store. It looks like a teeny, flexible plastic rake, for a teeny doll. It is meant to clean hair brushes, and it does a fabulous job of it. I looked on Amazon and you can purchase similar hair brush cleaners there, but I was surprised to see that they are not highly rated in the reviews. Mine is wonderful. It works splendidly! These little rakes are not expensive, so you may want to give one of them a try, especially if your hair brush is looking a tad woolly.

Have an amazing start to your weekend, friends!! See you tomorrow!

Violet Hues of Friday

Good morning. Happy Friday!! Happy Best Day of the Week!! On Fridays, I stick with the sensual stuff and I try to put my usual overthinking brain to the side. On Fridays, I list a favorite thing of mine that has made life more fun and interesting for me. Please tell us some of your favorites in the Comments section.

Today’s favorite is Versace Dylan Purple perfume. I LOVE perfume! I sometimes think that the sense of smell may be my favorite of all of our senses (when things smell good). Lately, any perfume which I’ve sampled seems to all smell the same. I haven’t smelled anything unique in a long time, until I caught a wonderful whiff of this perfume! I opened up the flap of one of those magazine ads and I felt like I had been transported into a purple haze of olfactory enchantment. I was so excited to smell something “all its own.” Try this perfume. It might just be your signature scent. (and remember, you can usually get samples at department stores, or you can buy sample vials on websites like eBay and Mercari and Poshmark, before buying a whole bottle. And these sample vials are great for travel!)

Have a great weekend, friends! Live it fully and in the moment!

Crabby Friday

(My right ear is still all clogged up and muffled. I am annoyed to the point that I am seriously considering holding a crab up to my ear and hoping for the best.)

Good morning!! Happy Friday!! Happy Favorite Things Friday!! On Fridays, I get out of my head and into my senses. Today’s focus is on the sense of taste. Today’s favorite of mine is so good, I bought an entire tray of Krab (yes, Krab with a “K”) which my husband doesn’t like at all and I only half-like, just because it was the only way to buy a tub of Sau-Sea Seafood Mustard Sauce at my local grocery store. This sauce is so tasty, I would drink it. I have eaten almost an entire tray of Krab for lunch this week, only for another delectable taste of Sau-Sea Seafood Mustard Sauce. Hopefully, you can find a tub of the sauce without the Krab, but either way, you won’t regret your purchase.

Have a wonderful weekend, friends. Hopefully no overheating, overeating, overdoing or being threatened by tornadoes, are in the cards for any of us this weekend!! Let’s try to get back to “easing” into summer.

Fairly Friday

Hi! Happy Friday!! Happy Best Day of the Week!! On Fridays on the blog, I discuss the stuff that makes my practical life more fun and magical. I call it “Favorite Things Friday”. Not too long ago, I recommended on the blog, a book written by one of Princess Margaret’s ladies-in-waiting, Anne Tennant. In the book, Anne mentions that she cleaned Princess Margaret’s vast shell collection with the princess, every single year. She said that they used Fairy Liquid to do this. Naturally, I was curious, so I looked up Fairy Liquid and it turns out that I could buy it on Amazon. I figured that if Fairy Liquid was good enough for a princess, it’s good enough for me. Fairy Liquid, appears to be ordinary green liquid soap, much like Palmolive, but it is honestly, much better. Fairy Liquid is highly concentrated and it cuts grease like no liquid soap that I have ever used before. There is no instant gratification like a really clean surface which just before the cleaning, had been a greasy mess. Buy yourself some magical, instant gratification in a bottle. You won’t regret it. (It really is about the everyday little things, friends. They all add up.)

Have a marvelous Memorial Day Weekend!!! The entrance to summer has arrived!

Friday’s Stacked Up

Credit: Redbubble.com

Good morning! Happy Friday!! Happy Best Day of the Week!! On Fridays, I keep things light and syrupy. On Fridays, I discuss things that make life, the art which we live. I like this quote that I read this morning:

I know artists whose medium is life itself, and who express the inexpressible without brush, pencil, chisel, or guitar. They neither paint nor dance. Their medium is Being. Whatever their hand touches has increased life. They are the artists of being alive.” – Frederick Franck

In my mind, Fridays are an especially good day to focus on the art of being alive. On Fridays, I discuss my favorite things in life, and today, my favorite is frozen pancakes by De Wafelbakkers. These are easy, convenient, delicious, medallion sized pancakes that come in all different flavors. They are wrapped in small stacks and all you have to do is zap them in the microwave for a few seconds and they are ready to be served. If you just need a little sweetness in your morning, one chocolate chip or blueberry De Wafelbakker pancake is all you need to satisfy your morning sweet-tooth. De Wafelbakker pancakes are found in 2 pound bags in the freezer section of your local grocery store.

Have a fabulous Friday! See you tomorrow!
